Why A Nutritional Protocol?
According to current trends in autism research, it has become apparent that the underlying cause of autism is biomedical. This means that to help a child, teen or adult reach their full potential, it is critical to identify and treat underlying health issues.
Behavioral modification and integrative
therapies (auditory, visual, and sensory) can be also extremely
beneficial when carried out in a humane fashion by competent and caring
professionals. However most children in the autism spectrum make
considerably more progress in these therapies if underlying health
issues are addressed at the same time. Nutritional intervention helps
parents get the most out of the time and/or money invested in other
therapies.
Tens of thousands parents have found that their children have made significant behavioral and cognitive gains when put on a nutritional intervention program. According to multiple surveys of parents including those through the Recovered Kids website and Defeat Autism Now organization, the majority of parents whose young children recovered from autism were placed on a nutritional intervention program. From a diagnosis that was considered to be permanent and non-recoverable, now it is estimated that up to 40% of children diagnosed with and autism spectrum disorder now lose their labels. Those those who do not lose their labels are often functioning at a significantly higher level than had been thought possible even 10 years ago.
What Causes Symptoms of Autism?
When a neurotypical person interacts with the outside world, what they see, hear, smell, and touch are simultaneously stored in the brain. The brain of a developing infant creates an internal cognitive/neurological map of the outside world that enables the child to make sense of and interact with the outside world. This cognitive/neurological map expands and interconnects most rapidly and extensively before the age of 3 1/2.
Current autism research points to autistic individuals having neurological disconnect, sensory distortion, and difficulty in filtering incoming information from the outside world before the age of 3 1/2. At first overwhelmed with incoming information, young children within the autism spectrum typically shut down one of their senses over time. If incoming information of hearing, sight, touch, spatial awareness and smell is not simultaneously and synchronously stored, information tends to be stored in a more disorganized fashion in the brain. Disorganized information is more difficult to retrieve and use in making sense of and interacting with the outside world.
For example, if visual images aren't linked with auditory sounds - individuals have difficulty make the connection between sounds being associated with images. For many individuals, there tends to be reduced sensitivity to receiving feedback from body extremities - hand flapping and spinning help the individual to receive more feedback from their extremities (proprioceptive feedback) to help them know where they are in space - where their body ends and the rest of the world begins which is essential to forming a sense of self and identity.
All viable autism therapies, nutritional and non-nutritional, help to make neurological connections and reduce sensory distortion.
Behavioral and cognitive symptoms that are manifested for many individuals are believed by researchers to be the result of a chronic auto-immune condition that includes inflammation of the intestinal tract and brain. Chronic inflammation may be triggered by a combination of genetic predisposition, infectious agents (such as a chronic viral, bacterial and/or yeast infection), and environmental triggers, which vary from person to person. This means that to help individuals within the autism spectrum, it is critical to identify and treat underlying health issues.
The intestinal tract is actually
considered to be a second brain - 80% of neurotransmitters are produced in the intestinal tract. In addition, 80% of our immune system cells line the intestinal tract. Inflammation and chronic infection within the intestinal tract results in reduced levels of critical neurotransmitters, impaired immune system function, and poor digestion and absorption of nutrients, which causes children within the autism spectrum to be malnourished.
Some of the enzymes that break down food in the intestinal tract and are used to manufacture vitamins and neurotransmitters are at low or non-existant levels for individuals within the autism spectrum. Many vitamins including B Vitamins and Vitamin K are produced in a healthy intestinal tract. Most individuals within the autism spectrum are deficient in B vitamins and do not absorb artificial and/or unmethylated forms of them well. Insufficient levels of vitamins, enzymes, and neurotransmitters lead to the impaired ability of the body to detoxify which results in the build-up of toxins in the liver and brain. which further impairs neurological development and interferes with creation and function of enzymes.
Chronic infections also deplete the body's supply of glutathione which is the most potent antioxidant the body produces. Glutathione is critical for detoxification and for the methylation cycle that signals neurological growth in the brain. The majority of glutathione is produced and stored in the liver and virtually all individuals within the autism spectrum are deficient in glutathione. Glutathione levels are also reduced by man-made environmental introductions into our food, water, and air supply such as fluoride, heavy metals and aspirin related products such as tylenol and ibuprofen. For example, mercury has a strong affinity to bind with sulfur and when it steals sulfur from sulfur-bearing molecules in the body and brain which are critical for methylation, sulfation, and building of neuronal structures in the brain.
Chronic infections in the gut that are typical in autism include overgrowth of Candida, Clostridia and Klebsiella. The by-products of these overgrowths may include toxins such as ammonia and excessive levels proprionic acid which also interfere with normal manufacture of neurotransmitters. It is very important to include a wide range of probiotics to reduce levels of toxins in the brain.
The brain is primarily made up of fat and fat lines the neurons that transmit information - specifically Omega 3 - which is an essential fat - it can only be obtained from food. All animals we consume must consume foods in Omega 3 for us to get Omega 3 oils. Unfortunately, in the food chain in the United States, the animals we eat, even farm-raised seafood, are fed corn which is deficient in Omega 3 oils. The vast majority of children within the autism spectrum benefit are deficient in Omega 3, which also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. One of the most popular and best absorbed forms of Omega 3 comes from Cod Liver Oil. Omega 6 oil, from coconut is also highly beneficial, providing the medium chain triglyceride fat that is one of two sources of fuel for the brain (the other being glucose) and also has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and fungal properties.

One of the sources of data that first gave me hope when my son was first diagnosed within the autism spectrum, was a survey of parents on the Recovered Kids web site, the majority of parents whose young children recovered from autism were placed on a nutritional intervention program.
Statistics are currently tentatively emerging from various surveys indicating that up to 40% of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder eventually lose their autism spectrum label. The prognosis in the mainstream medical community only 15 years ago, when my son was first diagnosed, was that recovery was not possible and that an autism diagnosis was life-long.
The greatest likelihood of losing an autism label occurs when the child is placed in a comprehensive intervention program before the age of 3 1/2, although anyone at any age can benefit from a carefully customized intervention program that makes sense for that individual. Regardless of whether or not a child loses a label, anyone at any age on the autism spectrum has the potential to become higher functioning and enjoy a better quality of life.

Enzymes

Methylation and Sulfation Support
Children in the autism spectrum generally have impaired methylation function. Methylation is one of the primary methods by which the body removes toxins. Providing trimethylglycine or dimethylglycine improves methylation function. Some children respond better to one that another, and so we are making both forms available. Methylation is the biochemical process of transferring a methyl group (consisting of 1 carbon atom/3 hydrogen atoms) from a donor molecule (such as trimethylglycine (TMG)) to an acceptor molecule such as homocysteine to convert homocysteine back to methionine. The use of sulfur bearing molecules in metabolic processes in the body is actually intertwined with methylation in the Methione/Glutathione Transsulfuration Pathway. Chelators used by Defeat Autism Now (DAN) doctors include DMSA and DMPS. Sometimes treatments are provided orally, through a cream that is absorbed into the skin (transdermally) or intravenously through an IV drip. These chelators are typically administered under a doctor's care. DMSA and DMPS pull out beneficial minerals in addition to heavy metals and it is important to monitor levels of minerals in the body to ensure that they are replenished through mineral supplementation to proper levels. However effective this approach is for many individuals, a significant number of individual within the autism spectrum appear to regress or suffer physiological stress with this protocol and they are typically labelled as "non-responders."
Autism Coach has put together a Chelation/Detoxification Natural Supplement Kit that has worked well with non-responders. We theorize that these individuals tend to be very overburdened with toxins and heavy metals, even more than the average individual within the autism spectrum. DMSA and DMPS protocols put too much stress on their liver and kidneys to properly excrete these toxins and so they end up releasing toxins without being able to efficiently remove them from their bodies. Natural chelators include glutathione, coriander (cilantro), alpha-lipoic acid, and chlorella (making sure the brand is free of heavy metals - such as our Chlorella), and high doses of Vitamin C (generally administered intravenously). Substances that help to ensure that mercury is excreted include Vitamin C and milk thistle. Glutathione and methyl donors are part of the methylation cycle that the body naturally uses to detoxify. The methylation cycle tends to be extremely impaired in autistic children. A combination of bio-available B6, B12, folinic acid, and Trimethylglycine, have been shown in clinical trial by Dr. Jill James to raise blood serum levels of glutathione in autistic children to normal. Glutathione is critical in removing heavy metals and is also used to create metalthionine, which is one of the critical substances produced by the body to remove heavy metals.
A therapy using intravenous high doses of Vitamin C to extract the mercury from tissues followed by intravenous glutathione is being used successfully with some Parkinson's patients who also appear to suffer from mercury toxicity. This approach is just in the experimental stages with children in the autism spectrum. Dr. Jeff Bradstreet is using this approach, amongst other DAN doctors. The reason for intravenous glutathione is that it is not typically well-absorbed through the intestinal tract. However, our Liposome-Enclosed Glutathioneis a recent innovation that provides an absorbable oral form of glutathione, where the glutathione is enclosed in fat-soluble liposomes.

In addition to supplements for chelation, two items available at your grocery store also help to remove heavy metals: coriander (also called cilantro) and poppy seeds. Coriander was accidentally discovered to significantly increase excretion of mercury, lead and aluminum. Poppy seeds are believed to increase excretion of nickel (nickel is an ingredient in hydrogenated fats such as shortening and margarine). In my local grocery store, fresh coriander comes in rubber-banded bunches, like parsley. I use a bunch in each batch of turkey chili I make for my son.
Proceed with caution: One must be careful that when mercury is detached from tissues and then bound to chelators that the mercury is excreted from the body and not reabsorbed where it can do more damage. Each child's metabolic pathway is different and each child may react differently to these chelators and efforts to remove heavy metals. Therefore, it is best to proceed under the care of a competent and knowledgeable physician who can perform regular testing to determine the levels of heavy metal excretion and monitor kidney and liver function. Some physicians believe that other metals must be removed before the mercury can be extracted. Also, also dental work containing mercury should be removed before proceeding with heavy-duty chelation so that the mercury from the fillings is not reabsorbed into tissues. Depending upon the type of chelator used, chelation can remove beneficial minerals as well as harmful ones. Sessions of chelation are often alternated with periods where levels of beneficial minerals are restored, and frequently levels of minerals are tested for during chelation. As parents and guardians of our children, we want to ensure we do more good than harm. However, as research is indicating, young children in particular can respond dramatically to chelation and sometimes recover from autism through this approach.
