Smart Alex is a larger than life cartoon character who
laughs, talks, cries, blows raspberries and does many other actions that
simulate feelings. Alex can also express emotions through facial changes.
Alex(s) can be male or female, black or white. Four games are included in
this appealing package which encourages expression, vocalization,
concentration and the ability to find words of Rebus symbols.
Use Alex in a story session with young children by asking the children to
give Alex different expressions according to the story. At a higher level,
keyboard users can hold a simple conversation with Alex and talk about
their likes and dislikes.
If you give Alex a word he doesn’t know, he’ll ask you
more about it and remember the word next time you type it in.
This program is a bit pricey for what it offers as it is
more a specialty program designed to be used by educators and more limited
in scope than some of the other programs offered through Autism
Coach. However, for the right child it may trigger critical social
understanding and growth that make the program well worth it. It is
shipped as a floppy disk and with an instruction manual.
Smart Alex works with mouse, keyboard, touch screens or a simple switch.
