TextThing is an innovative program that develops
children's key literacy and language skills through text that's relevant
to them provided by the parent or teacher.
The suite of activities covers re-building text letter-by-letter and word-by-word, grammatical awareness, spelling, sentence construction, Cloze procedure and punctuation. You can even generate unlimited word searches and crossword puzzles based on the selected text!
More than 100 starter texts are provided, including poems, tales, recipes, articles, descriptions, letters, points of view, instructions, official documents and extracts from Shakespeare, Alice in Wonderland and Aesop’s Fables. Your own files can, of course, be saved for re-use, and all can be printed for homework.
These games provide a
stimulating cognitive workout while improving literacy skills.
This new, must-have resource comes with two interfaces you can
configure, one colorful and 'fun' for younger children, the other more
'grown-up' for teenagers and adults. The activities are:
* Letter-by-letter - recreate a text a letter at a
time; for disclosure
* Word-by-word - rebuild a text word by word; strengthens memory
* Scrambled words - make words in text out of jumbled letters
* Scrambled sentences - make sentences in text out of jumbled words
* Spelling tests - based upon text
* Sort text
* Punctuation - put back in correct punctuation
* Fill the blanks - for clozure
* Print word puzzles - create cross-word puzzles & word searches
You can choose from a children's or adult interferace:

You can then choose the text file you wish to use:

Once your text is loaded in, you can start playing the
games, such as the punctuation game:

Or a memory game to rebuild the text word by word:

Or a spelling test:

But that isn't all! TextThing can print paper
versions of most of the activities. It provides full control over
difficulty levels to allow fine differentiation between pupils. Options
saved for a particular individual can load a particular text and
concentrate on specific letter groups to focus on activities important
to them. A unique 'OneFile' feature bundles options and related text
into a single file, for archiving or loading on another machine, e.g.
distance learners can be e-mailed pre-set activities by their tutor.
